Olympic Torch Relay in Whistler
The Olympic Torch Relay arrived in Whistler February 5 as it made its way to Vancouver for the opening of 2010 Winter Olympic Games February 12. Crowds of over 10,000 welcomed the Flame at Skiers Plaza where music by Ali Milner and the Whistler Children's Chorus as well as fireworks brought the Olympic Spirit alive. The torch entered Whistler and made its way to the village via Nita Lake, Creekside, and the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre where it was passed between a Squamish Nation torchbearer and a Lil'wat Nation torchbearer. After the Village Stroll, the Flame was carried by 2010 Ski Cross Olympian Julia Murray up Whistler Mountain on an electric snowmobile where she lit the torch of Olympian Steve Podbroski. The former Crazy Canuck then skied down Whistler Mountain where he passed the Flame to the final torchbearer, 17 year old Whistler resident Tyler Allison. Tyler lit the cauldron in Skiers Plaza in front of VANOC CEO Jon Furlong, Whistler Mayor Ken Melamed, Gary Lunn Minister of State for Sport, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, Joan McIntyre MLA West Vancouver-Garibaldi, and John Weston MP West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country. Overall, one of Whistler's best nights.
